Some banners are so large they can cover the side of a building. Dan Bright of Airpark Banner and Signs explains "large building banners are usually made of mesh so the wind can pass through them". The most commonly used material is a heavy weight vinyl. The weights of the different banners range from as light as 9 ounces too as heavy as 22 ounces per square yard.
Vinyl banners can be printed with water based, semi-solvent as well as solvent based ink. The inks are sprayed onto the banner material by computer-controlled jets. These jets pull ink from ink reservoirs and spray them on to the banner material. The distribution of the ink is controlled bay a computer plotting software. Two of the more popular software programs for this type of large format printing are Onyx and Flexi.
Some of the faster printers are capable of printing up to 1600 square feet per hour. Some of the more popular large format printer manufactures are Mamaki, Jetta, Xerox, Kodak, Encad and HP.
Vinyl banners have many uses and applications. They are most often used to promote a company's logo, a special promotion, event, team or School. Since vinyl is a rather flexible as well as portable material you can see vinyl banners just about anywhere. Vinyl banners are commonly seen as billboards, table banners, trade show banners, building banners, street banners as well as stadium flags.
