Booster packs generally contain a relatively small number of items (6-19 for cards; 3-8 for figurines), randomly assorted. Booster packs are the smaller, cheaper counterparts of starter packs, though many expansion sets are sold only in boosters. While booster packs are cheaper than starter packs, the price per item is typically higher.

Booster packs are generally priced to serve as good impulse purchases, with prices comparable to a comic book and somewhat lower than those of most magazines, paperback books, and other such items.

In many games, there is a fixed distribution based on rarity, while others use truly random assortments. When the distribution is based on rarity, booster packs traditionally contain one or two rares, depending on the game, while the remainder are of lesser rarity.

Booster pack: 11 cards per booster - 1 rare, 3 uncommons and 7 commons.;

Booster pack: 7 cards per booster - 1 scene card, 1 rare and 5 common cards. There is a one in three chance that one of the common cards will be replaced with an ultra-rare card.;

Duel Masters

Booster pack: 10 cards per booster - not guaranteed to contain rare cards, although more than one is possible in a booster. If a booster does contain such a card, it will be either uncommon, rare, very rare, or super rare.;

Booster pack: 13 plastic cards per booster - 1 rare, 3 uncommons, 9 commons.;

Legend of the Five Rings

Booster pack: 15 cards per booster - 1 rare, 3 uncommons, 11 commons. Some rares and uncommons are foiled.;

Lord of the Rings, The

Booster pack: 11 cards per booster - 1 rare, 3 uncommons, 7 commons. There is a one in seven chance that a special foil card takes the place of the rare.;

Magic: The Gathering

Normal booster pack: 15 cards per booster - 1 rare, 3 uncommons and 11 commons, never containing basic lands (several exceptions exist, such as in Core Set packs which are meant for beginners, in Un- sets where the basic lands become the only cards from Un- sets to be tournament-legal, and in the Coldsnap set where packs may contain basic snow land which are still basic land nevertheless). A pack may contain a premium (holofoil) card to replace a common from the pack.; Tournament pack: 75 cards per pack - 3 rares, 10 uncommons and 32 commons, plus 30 basic land cards (roughly 6 of each type). Essentially, 1 tournament pack is equivalent to 3 booster packs plus 30 lands. Each tournament pack is guaranteed to have a premium/holofoil, which can be of any rarity.;
